Needs From: UWCK Volunteer Center

Volunteer: Patient/Family Support Volunteer

Patient/Family Support Volunteers are a meaningful part of the hospice care team, offering presence, kindness, and practical support to patients and their loved ones. Volunteers create comfort and connection during an important time, while also supporting staff and enhancing the overall experience of care.

Trained volunteers serve in a variety of settings, including patients’ homes, the Frances Georgeson Hospice House, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living communities. Because patients are located throughout the county, many volunteer opportunities are available close to home—sometimes even within a volunteer’s own neighborhood. A commitment of approximately 4 hours per week is requested and may include visits, training, or meetings.

Volunteer opportunities include:

Visiting with patients and families to provide companionship and emotional support

Offering respite for caregivers so they can rest or run errands knowing their loved one is not alone

Friendly visits with hospice patients living in long-term care facilities

Administrative and front-desk support that helps create a welcoming environment

PAWS: visiting patients in facilities with a certified therapy dog

Adult and children’s grief support group assistance

Vigil support, providing presence at the end of life

Hand aromatherapy, offering soothing touch with essential oils

This role is ideal for individuals who value human connection and want to make a quiet but powerful difference in the lives of patients and families.
